09/10/2010 | San Miniato - Tuscany
Balconevisi, near San Miniato, hosts an annual medieval festival with races where the competitors are...ducks.
This cute and unusual "Palio" has taken place annually since 1982 and involves the four boroughs of Il Borgo, Fondo di Scesa, Buecchio and Fornacino in an animated race. The quacking contestants waddle past each other at as great a speed as they can muster, cheered on by enthusiastic locals.

There is also an historical parade (which reenacts different events from the history of the locality every year) and food stalls serving up local specialities for the length of the weekend. Losers of the duck race beware....

The celebration coincides with that of the Madonna of the Rosario, officially instituted by the Catholic church on 9 October but held in Balconevisi on either the first or second weekend of the month.
