  THE MARCHES
   Period:  ""
   Province/State:  "MARCHE"
We went to the region called ‘Le Marche’ in central Italy for a long weekend. As we were going with our three children we hoped to do a bit of swimming in the sea but when we saw the weather forecast we decided to pack some casual clothing…just in case! As it turned out we did the right thing. However, it didn’t spoil our trip (one of the advantages of travelling by motorhome is that when the weather is not on your side you can still get out and about) and following some modifications in our itinerary we headed for the ‘Conero’ peninsula where one of the most famous Italian poets was born: ‘Giacomo Leopardi’. Here, we visited his birthplace and an enormous library. Later in the morning, armed with our umbrellas, we walked to a hill close by which was of great inspiration to the poet. In the afternoon we went to the caves of ‘Frasassi’ where there are some amazing stalagmites and stalactites to be seen…and we didn’t get wet!! Not far from these caves there was a well-equipped area where we spent the night. The following day we drove across the Conero peninsula, just south of Ancona where the solitary limestone peak of Monte Conero rises and whose steep slopes slide down to the sea and the prettiest beaches on the whole of the Northern Adriatic shore. The beauty of the place was quite something even if we weren’t able to have a swim!! In the afternoon we headed for ‘Loreto’, home to a very important sanctuary. In the evening we dined in a local restaurant, just to make a change (I think the kids were happier in the motorhome!). That evening we stayed near Siloro. For the next day we had planned to go to the castle in Gradara (legend has it that the castle was the scene of the famous and tragic love story of Paolo and Francesca, caught in each other's arms and killed by Gianciotto, Francesca's husband. Dante, in his Divine Comedy, immortalized this love story). In the afternoon we headed back home leaving behind us a rather wet region which we think added something ‘different’ to the trip and the kids never complained once!!
