  TOUR OF LOMBARDY
   Period:  ""
   Province/State:  "LOMBARDIA"

Day 1

We landed at Orio airport and were met by a nice guy called Pierangelo who drove us to the depot where we picked up our motorhome. We did a bit of grocery shopping and headed for Lecco, a small town on Lake Como. We didn’t spend long here as our aim was to reach Varenna further up the lake. We found a quiet spot to park for the night and went on foot to the small port where we got on a ferry boat to Bellagio which is such a pretty town that it was a pity to leave so soon. We headed back to the motorhome in the early evening and had dinner then we went for a walk around Varenna and had an ice cream.

Day 2

We continued our tour around the lake stopping to photograph some of the imposing villas by the lake. We stopped for lunch in Cernobbio where there is an impressive villa called the ‘Grand Hotel Villa D’Este’. We then made our way to Como this time opting for a parking area which had services for motorhomes. We had a quiet evening as we got to the area quite late but made sure we were up early the next day.

Day 3

We spent the morning walking around the town and we also visited the silk museum (Como is famous for the production of fine fabrics). In the afternoon we went on a boat trip back to Bellagio where we had time for an ice cream before returning to Como. The views from the boat were really special and we took plenty of pictures. We left Como in the evening (don’t forget to discharge your dirty waters and take on fresh water before leaving) and drove to Lake Maggiore. We found a quiet area by Lake Varese and settled down for the night.

Day 4

In the morning we went to Sacro Monte Varese. There is a long walk, which for some is a pilgrimage, up a sacred hill to a chapel at the top. The view was fantastic and there was a nice café at the top where we all had a ‘real’ cappuccino! Later in the afternoon we went to Stresa on Lake Maggiore. We found somewhere to park for the night and went for a walk in the town. We decided to have dinner on one of the small islands called ‘Isole Borromee’. It was a bit expensive but then again it’s not something you do everyday, is it?

Day 5

We were getting to the end of our week so we started to move back towards Bergamo. We went via Pavia and Cremona. Pavia was first on our list. We had only intended to spend a few hours here but we ended up spending most of the day here. The reason was that the ‘Certosa di Pavia’, a Renaissance monastery, is well worth sending the whole morning in. The town to is quite nice especially the cathedral. In the late afternoon we made our way to Cremona. We found a place to discharge our water tanks as they were getting a bit full (something we kept forgetting to do!!) loaded some fresh water and then got ready for the night.

Day 6

We decided to include Cremona in our itinerary as my wife is keen on classical music and they say that Cremona is the home of the modern violin (Stradivarius was born here) and there is a museum dedicated to him and the modern violin (the Stradivarius museum). In the afternoon we made our way to Malpaga where there is a small castle with some interesting frescoes.
