  MOLISE
   Period:  ""
   Province/State:  "MOLISE"
Our destination was the ‘Tremiti Islands’, a small archipelago just an hour’s ferry ride from the mainland. We left the motorhome in the port (there is a guarded car park that I would advise you used as there are a lot of suspicious people around…and it’s not that expensive) as we were told that only one of the islands was large (or should I say small) enough for a motorhome to circulate. We asked about accommodation on the island before leaving and as it wasn’t high season yet we were able to find something. There are indeed very few beds available on the island.
We spent two days there and I must say there were two of the best days we’ve ever had on holiday. Now we know why this place is kept such a secret.
Regrettably, we made our way back to the mainland and spent the day walking around Termoli, the old town is built on a peninsula and the white painted houses and narrow alleyways conjure up images of Greece.
Just north of Termoli you can park overnight literally on the beach and in the morning we got a fantastic view of the sunrise over the sea.
We then headed inland towards Campobasso. On the way we stopped to see the mosaics in Larino which are considered some of the best in Italy.
Molise is indeed a very small region and it is definitely off the beaten track but never the less it is well worth a trip there. Campobasso isn’t one of the most notorious cities in Italy but it turned out to be quite interesting. The old town, situated on a hilltop, was abandoned following an earthquake.
We spent the night in Campobasso and set off in the morning for Apulia.
Molise isn’t one of the most exciting regions in Italy but if you’re looking for something a little quieter than the main tourist routes you won’t be disappointed with Molise.
